Some time
ago I was walking past the war memorial for the umpteenth time and
started wondering about the people from Henham whose names were
inscribed on the plaque. All except one died during the first world
war. |
|
By
coincidence, soon after I was chatting to Paul Ingold who works for
Mokut. Paul's job is to cut the greens, churchyard and the grass
round the memorial. He told me that his grandfather was in the
list. He was quietly proud of the fact that he had the opportunity
to look after the memorial.
Later I
spoke to Jill Turner who said that her father's youngest brother
Reginald Vincent Turner, born 1897 also featured there.
I have
also discovered that one of the men named used to live in the house Jill
and I now occupy.
Rather
than leave it until I had exhausted my efforts to find out more, I
decided I would start the ball rolling with what I had found out with
the hope that when people read this there may be some who can help me
with more information. The first person I am therefore going to
feature is Frank Camp and the words are supplied by Joy Lafferty, his
niece. Bill

"Frank
Camp, one of the names on Henham's War Memorial was in 10th Battalion
Essex Regiment and was killed on 1st day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st
July 1916. He has no known grave but his name is recorded on the
Thiepral Memorial in France along with the names of 72,000 other
soldiers. After 83 years, three generations of his family visited
the memorial taking a posy of flowers from gardens in Henham and the
youngest member wore a copy of Frank's cap badge. It was a very
emotional visit." |
|
The
Memorial, designed by Sir Edward Lutyens is truly impressive and the
grounds immaculately kept.
As we
walked up to the memorial we were met with a long low wall with the
words, 'Their name liveth for evermore' on it. For us and many
other families who still mourn their loved ones it is certainly true."
(Joy,
Mandy, Alice and Josh at the memorial) |

| Hopefully,
I
will talk to more people in the village to find out about
the other names and I would be pleased to hear from anybody who has moved away from the village who
may be able to help. - BB

Who Died in the Great War
Back in July 2004 I
received an email from a chap called Steve Hazon, who in conjunction
with another man called Bill Marshall had produced a book called the '
The Takeley Book of Remembrance' which I believe investigated the
history of people from Takeley in the armed services who had died
in WW1. He had done some research on our behalf on similar people
from Henham.
Listed below is a summary
of his findings. If anyone
can help with and more information please contact me and I will publish
it. - BB

2005 Update
emails received from
Pauline Waldron
My
name is Pauline Waldron and I am tracing my family history. I have
access to e-mail but not to the internet. A friend does have access to
the internet and has found your site. He has printed off a couple of
things for me which are very interesting. One of the sheets he has
printed is entitled
"
The War Memorial". My Grandfather is one of the men whose
name is on this memorial Frank Charles Bentley, although I see that he
is "W Bentley" on the photograph. I wonder why?. He was
born in Henham on January 21st 1881 and was married in Henham Parish
Church on May 23rd 1904 to Rosetta Parker. He died on March 25th 1918,
has no known grave & his memorial in France is on the Pozieres
Memorial, Somme, France on panels 28 & 29. He was a private in the
7th Bn, Bedfordshire Regiment & his service number
was 17561.He had 6 children, Charles, Albert, Annie, Florrie, Esther my
mother, & Nellie. His wife died on Christmas Day 1923 and the
children were fostered until they were old enough to look after
themselves. His father was Alfred Bentley and his mother was Martha
Rickett. Alfred was born September 30th 1841 in Debden & married
Martha in Henham on May 2nd 1868. I have found them on the 1881 census
living at Wood End Green, Henham & he was a higgler. Alfred's
parents were John Bentley & Hannah Camp.
From Pauline.

Bill,
Many
thanks for your reply to my e-mail a few weeks ago. I sent off for the
book "Memories of Henham", and it really is a super
publication. Many of my mother's stories of her childhood have come to
life for me with photos of the church, the railway, and the duck pond
where the girls used to do cartwheels on the railings. I would be very
pleased for you to publish the details in my e-mail about my grandfather
and his family, and will keep my fingers crossed for someone to maybe
get in touch. You may also give my e-mail address.( george.waldron@btopenworld.com
)
I
attach a photo of my grandfather and his wife taken in about 1914/1915.

received from Glyn Warwick
Bill
I came across your Henham
website and noticed your War Memorial page.
I am presently
researching all those commemorated on the Stansted Memorial - during my
research I came across your C SMITH and can confirm that CLIFFORD SMITH
is your man
CWGC gives the following
info and a search on Soldiers Died CD gives his first name as Clifford.
Hope this solves your
puzzle
If you need any info on
any of your other names let me know.
Best Regards
Glyn Warwick ( Stansted)

Hello
there,
I have some information on BC Heard, which I found while researching my
family tree, whose name is inscribed on the War Memorial.
Basil Claude Christmas Heard was the son of the Henham Wheelwright,
Walter Heard. The Heard family had been Wheelwrights in Henham since, at
least, the mid 18th. century.
Here's an extract from the family history -
Census on 31 Mar 1901 in Church End Henham
Essex.4 Living here were:
Walter HEARD, Wheelwright, 54, b. Henham,
Essex, England
Emily HEARD, 50, b. Chickney, Essex, England
Emily B HEARD, 22, b. Henham, Essex, England
Horace FC HEARD, Wheelwright, 19, b. Henham,
Essex, England
Harold V Heard, Market Gardener, 17, b. Henham,

Alonzo AA Heard, Farm Errand Boy, 14, b.
Henham, Essex, England
Evelyn L Heard, 11, b. Henham, Essex, England
Basil CC Heard, 4, b. Henham, Essex, England
Alfreda B Heard, 2, granddaughter, b. Henham,
Essex, England
Walter married Emily before 1873. Emily
was born about 1851 in Chickney Essex and died on 31 Aug 1935 in Henham
Essex 2 about age 84. They had 13 children:
Martha E A, Archibald Walter, Thomas Augustus, Frank Arthur, Emily
Bertha, Isaac Charles, Horace Fc, Harold Vernon, Aloma Amelia, Alonzo Aa
Heard, Zeodyn Lohen Clair, Evelyn L, and Basil Claude Christmas.
Basil Claude Christmas Heard
was born about 1897, died on 23 Oct 1916 in Somme France 5
about age 19, and was buried after 16 Oct 1916 in Thiepval Memorial
Cemetry, Somme, France.

Dear Bill,
I came
across your website when starting to research my family tree at
Christmas and it has provided invaluable information. My family now live
in Norfolk but much trawling through the family records centre and the
internet had led me to Henham.
My
Great-grandfather (Walter Thomas Dennison) was born in Henham in 1889
and married Alice Rudduck. Investigating his family led me to find that
he had a sister Kate Eliza (b13/12/1890), and brothers Frederick (b
1885), George (b. 1897) and Arthur (b. 1898). The best piece of history
I have found is from your War
Memorial page where Arthur Dennison who died in WWI is my
great-grandfather's brother.
My family
tree also goes further - also living in Henham. My Great-great
grandfather was James Dennison whom married Mary Ann Camp (I also notice
the names on the War Memorial as Camp) and James had 6 brother and
sisters. James Dennison's (b. 1863) father also James Dennison (b.1829)
lived in Henham and was married to Kitty Sprusen. It is Kitty and James
that I am interested as the census returns have them as schoolmaster and
schoolmistress. I wondered whether the schools in Henham had records of
teachers in the 1850s and 1860s?
Also, as I
have exhausted internet avenues of family history are there are any good
sources of records in Henham - e.g. church records or parish records
that survive? I guess that I will have to visit soon but thought that I
would ask just in case you had any good information.
Paul
Dennison
