There has been a school in Henham for over 155 years.  It moved to its current site in 1975 from the old building in Crow Street which is now known as OSCA.

By current means of measurement it is recognised as one of the most successful in Essex, but perhaps more importantly, the people of Henham recognise its proper value and importance to the community and the children who are its pupils.

The School

The School has seven, single-aged classes in the main school with 165 children, and a further 35 children in the Nursery. Within these classes, groups of children are taught according to their individual needs.

The Nursery is fully integrated into the life of the school and has access to all of the main school facilities.

Facilities outside include an extensive playing field, two playgrounds, a wildlife garden and an adventure play area. A recent addition in late 2004 is an excellent Sports and Community Hall.

The new hall

The school enjoys close links with the village community, including the church, sports clubs, youth organisations and local services.

So that numbers within classes can be balanced, it is usual for classes to consist of children of different year groups. This means that children may remain in the same class for two years.  Within these classes, groups of children are taught according to their individual needs. This class organisation policy is set by the Governing Body and implemented by the Head Teacher.

Children are admitted to the Nursery taking the oldest children on the waiting list first. The children from the 'catchment area', Henham and Ugley, can then remain in the school until the age of eleven.

Children move from the Nursery into the Reception class of the main school at the beginning of the term during which they will be five years old. If you live outside the "catchment area", application, may be made to the Local Education Authority to request a place. Please contact the Head Teacher for more information.
