Spring Show 2007

The Henham and District Garden Society came into being around a table, over a cup of tea, in the summer of 1966.
The four people who had the idea for a Garden Club and were the founder members were Mrs. Doris Thomas, Mr. Ivor Thomas, Mr. O. Brace and Mr. Watson. The yearly subscription fee was to be 2/6d, which included both husband and wife. Mr. Brace was duly elected Chairman and Mr. Jim Smith was President.

The first meetings took place in the Church Hall in Henham. The Society started off with just twelve members, growing steadily to twenty, but then dropped away. After two years our membership was so low that we left the Church Hall and took up residence in the back room of 'The Cock' Public House (great for a drink after meetings). By this time we were down to six paid up members, but somehow the Society kept going. After three years and when the membership began to recover we left 'The Cock' continuing our meetings in OSCA. Membership increased to 60 in the early 90s and today stands at around 35 enthusiastic, active gardeners.

We abandoned the office of President many years ago and are now content with a Chairman and hardworking Committee of eight members. We briefly tried to hold meetings in the Village Hall when membership increased, but found it noisy with heaters on, cold without and the acoustics inferior where speakers were concerned. So there was a return to OSCA where the Society remains to this day.

Meetings are held every month on the first Tuesday. There is an annual Spring Flower Show and a late Summer Flower & Produce Show. The shows are very well supported but we are always looking for new members to exhibit at the shows.

We have an annual dinner and social evening which in February 2007 was at Hunters Meet in Hatfield Heath. Also outings to gardens in the summer months and an annual plant and table top sale in May. We have had some very good speakers at the monthly meetings and in March 2007 we had some 60 people including 12 non members to listen to a talk from RHS Hyde Hall. The attendance was expected to be high and the venue was switched from OSCA to the Elsenham School Hall to accommodate the audience. We were very pleased that non members attended and enjoyed the evening.

The programme for the remainder of 2007 is:

Tuesday May 1 "The lost gardens of Hertfordshire" by Ms Rowe

Saturday May 12 Plant & produce sale at Elsenham School Hall

Thursday June 14 Coach trip to BBC Gardeners World Live, NEC

Tuesday July 3 "Gardening for Butterflies" by Mr Downie

Tuesday July 31 Old Vicarage Garden, Broxted, with afternoon tea

Tuesday Sept. 4 Coach trip to R.H.S. Garden, Wisley

Saturday Sept. 8 Late Summer Flower & Produce Show

Tuesday Oct. 2 "Propagation" by Aubrey Barker

Tuesday Nov. 6 AGM and social evening

Tuesday Dec. 4 "The Wonderful World of Willow" by Sandra Barker

We welcome new members, whether experienced gardeners or newcomers to the hobby. We have members from as far afield as Saffron Walden and many are from Elsenham and the surrounding villages as well as Henham. Please come along to any of the Tuesday meetings which start at 8pm and you will be given a warm welcome. Annual membership is only ₤8. If you would like any information call Mrs Jo Jeffery (chairman) 850713, Mrs Pam King (vice-chairman) 813468 or Mrs Janet Tulley (secretary) 813786

Spring Show 2007

We had a successful Spring Show on March 31st with 22 members entering more than 150 exhibits, a very good display for a small village show.
Mrs Pam King won the Rose Bowl for most points and Mrs Joan Watts the runners up cup.
Joint third were Ms Doreen Miller and Mrs Iris Morton. Pam also won trophies for most points in the six daffodil classes and for the combined craft and cookery sections.
Mrs Jean Smith won the Greensleeves cup for best exhibit in show. The ladies had a clean sweep of the prizes so we are looking for some more male competitors in the summer show!
